Top Social Artist and Billboard Social 50 are two different things but they are related. Let us not confuse ourselves.
Billboard Social 50 is a chart which uses music analytics like Next Big Sound to determine the ranks. It includes collecting and assessing engagement metrics and social activity on various social media and music streaming sites.
Next Big Sound gathers information and data from the following:
· Wikipedia
· Pandora
· AllMusic
· MusicBrainz
· Songkick
Next Big Sound DOES NOT gather data from Youtube and Instagram anymore. However, if Billboard does engage with a different music analytics team for Billboard Social 50, then Youtube and Instagram may be counted.
What is Top Social Artist?
Top Social Artist is a recognition given by Billboard Music Awards to an artist who achieves certain goals. Global influence is a plus, but they focus more on US audience interactions.
Billboard Music Awards nominees are determined by several factors such as digital sales, streaming in US-recognized platforms, radio plays and radio spins, exposure to the US concert scene, charting in different Billboard charts, charting in Billboard Social 50, etc. There are also voting activities open for the top 5 nominees via the website and via the use of Twitter hashtags.
What are radio plays and radio spins?
Radio plays are based on the number of times songs of a certain artist is played on US radio stations. Billboard has a separate chart for this. But KPOP so far has not made much of an exposure in the US radio scene yet. Even the biggest KPOP artists are still having a hard time to break into the market with radio djs refusing to acknowledge the kind of music KPOP brings on the table.
One way to help an artist get radio play is through the app SHAZAM. SHAZAM is a free app and is a go-to source for what's hot in music. It is NOT a streaming app. It is used to identify songs based on a short sample played and predicts the next hit song by the number of counts a certain song gets on the app. US radio stations use Shazam's charts as reference to identify which songs are popular. In turn, this will give these songs a chance at radio play. This will be useful if we want Seventeen to get into the Billboard charts.
Radio Spins are recorded when a subscriber listens to a song for more than 30 seconds while tuned in to an Apple Music radio station. Apple Music radio stations are created when a user picks a song or an artist to generate a custom radio station, or from an Apple Music curated radio station.
